About

My name is Nick Turenne and I am computing science graduate from SFU. I have a passion for learning and all things data and IT, whether that be data science, data analysis, or data engineering. During my time at SFU, I also played for the club lacrosse team. Outside of the office or school I enjoy fishing, hiking, reading, and watching MMA/UFC. I began my computer science journey in highschool where I learned the fundamentals of programming with Python and ever since I have been hooked. I am an avid learner and enjoy figuring out how various systems and computer related technologies work. Some of my favourite courses I have taken at SFU include: CMPT 410: Machine Learning; CMPT 404: Cryptography; CMPT 354: Database Systems I; and CMPT 454: Database Systems II.

• Homelab Linux Server Deployment
  • February 2026 - March 2026
  • This is a project where I repaired and repurposed old and damaged computer to deploy a lightweight linux server in my home.
  • Repurposed old and damaged laptop to deploy a headless Linux server environment.
  • Configured SSH access and user permissions to ensure secure remote administration.
  • Deployed and maintained self-hosted file sharing services enabling secure file access across devices.
  • Implemented DHCP IP reservations to maintain consistent device addressing, improving reliability of remote access to self-hosted services.


• Cycling Sales Data Analysis
  • December 2025 - January 2026
  • This is a project that analyzes sales performance across revenue, customers, products, and geography using interactive Tableau dashboards.
  • Built KPI dashboards for revenue, profit, margin, and unit performance.
  • Segmented customers by age and gender to identify high value groups.
  • Analyzed product categories and subcategories for profitability.
  • Visualized geographic trends to guide regional strategy.

• UFC Fight Outcome Predictor
  • November 2025 - December 2025
  • This is a project where historical UFC fight data is used to train predictive models for fight outcomes and then compare and evaluate the different models trained (Logistic Regression and LightGBM).
  • Built a time-aware UFC fight outcome predictor using LightGBM, preventing data leakage by training only on past fight data incrementally gathered during dataset construction.
  • Engineered matchup advantage features (strike, takedown, submission, control time metrics) for robust model training input
  • Reduced corner bias through fight mirroring and identified model behavior using SHAP feature analysis.

• Transcript Analysis
  • November 2025 - February 2026
  • Built an end-to-end Python analytics pipeline to analyze academic performance using credit-weighted GPA, department-level comparisons, and time-series trends.
  • Designed a modular data analysis pipeline to clean, analyze, and visualize academic performance data.
  • Engineered weighted GPA and course difficulty metrics using credit-weighted grade points.
  • Compared personal GPA trends against class averages across academic terms using custom visualizations.

• Student Success Experiment
  • May 2025 - August 2025
  • This was a professional project where I collaborated with data scientists to implement a predictive model to identify student success.
  • Performed ETL using SQL and Python on large amounts of student data to achieve a working data set used for model training.
  • Conducted EDA using the Python libraries Pandas and Seaborn to create data visualizations and identify patterns, relationships, and anomalies.
  • Assisted in training and testing several models using the scikit-learn Python library.

  • As an avid fan of games, I wanted to create the standard game of blackjack using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in order to learn JavaScript and test my understanding of HTML and CSS. The wins, losses, and ties are tracked locally. The dealer stands on 16.

• UFC Data Scraper and Visualizer

  • This project scrapes UFC fight matchup data for the fighters scheduled on the next UFC event and saves the parsed information in a JSON file. The JSON file is then read and fighter stats are displayed side by side for quick and efficient analysis.

• ArtChart

  • This was a group project I completed for my class CMPT 362: Mobile Application Development. ArtChart is an Android app that was developed using Kotlin in Android Studio. The app is designed to be a collection of user submitted street art and public art pieces. The app allows users to create an account, view submitted artwork using the Google Maps API, submit artwork to the database, and leave reviews for art pieces as well.

• Beyond the Quintessence

  • Beyond the Quintessence is a roguelike game made using C# and the Unity engine and has been a side project of mine for a while. The game utilizes various object oriented programming patterns, pathfinding algorithms, and procedural generation techniques in order to achieve the desired gameplay loop. The game is available for download on the game sharing website itch.io and has been downloaded and played by users on the site. I still periodically work on and update the game when I have new ideas for content.
